Hydroponics in Kechara Forest Retreat

Jan 7, 2016 | Views: 234

What is hydroponics? Hydroponics is a subset of hydro culture and is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral solution only, or in an inert medium, such as perlite or gravel.

A few weeks back, Rinpoche advised a group of us to go visit Mini Cameron in Genting Highlands to get some insight into how they use hydroponics to grow healthy vegetables. After the visit, Martin Chow, Pastor Moh Mei and the Green Team decided to do something similar on a trial basis. Growing healthy vegetables!!

After some research, the Malaysia Hydroponics team was invited to KFR. They shared the different types of planting methods, planting materials and types of vegetables that were suitable for KFR. We would like to thank the Malaysia Hydroponics team for the valuable sharing!

Malaysia Hydroponics sharing about hydroponics

Generally there are 6 types of hydroponics.

  1. Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)
  2. Ebb & flow
  3. Drip irrigation
  4. Water culture
  5. Aeroponics
  6. Aquaponics

In KFR, we chose NFT and drip irrigation to suit the crops we will be planting. NFT is good for growing lettuce and leafy vegetables. The crops grow fast and are easy to maintain. The drip system is good for tomatoes and cucumbers.

*“NFT is a hydroponic technique wherein a very shallow stream of water containing all the dissolved nutrients required for plant growth is re-circulated past the bare roots of plants in a watertight gully, also known as channels. The main advantage of the NFT system over other forms of hydroponics is that the plant roots are exposed to adequate supplies of water, oxygen and nutrients.”

*”Drip irrigation, is an irrigation method that saves water and fertilizer by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants, either onto the soil surface or directly onto the root zone, through a network of valves, pipes, tubing, and emitters. It is done through narrow tubes that deliver water directly to the base of the plant.”

We also had the chance to plant green amaranth as our first vegetable, which is already sprouting now.  After one week, they will be transplanted into the NFT system that has been setup.

Soon, KFR will be planting more healthy vegetables!
