Limau Kasturi (Calamondin) Provides Us With Vitamin C!

Sep 8, 2015 | Views: 1,811

Known as limau kasturi (or calamansi) in Malaysia, the Calamondin tree is a hybrid between the genus citrus and Fortunella (kumquats). Native to China, it was first introduced to the United States in 1900 as an “acid orange” and has since been widely cultivated throughout Southeast Asia, India, Hawaii, the West Indies, and Central and North America.

Bearing fruits all-year round, limau kasturi’s are known to be especially attractive when fruits are present and are popularly kept in North America as ornamental plants, both indoors and outdoors where they thrive in cold climates (although sensitive to frost). They have an average lifespan of 5 years, but have been known to bear fruits for up to 20 years!

At Kechara Forest Retreat, there are 6 trees that consistently bears enough fruits to be harvested every 2-3 days. They are usually made into refreshing drinks, where squeezing a few limau kasturi’s into a jug of cold water is sufficient enough to provide the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C!

There are various benefits and uses of limau kasturi‘s including:

  • Reducing itch on the scalp (contains anti-inflammatory properties)
  • Reducing itch and irritation from insect bites
  • Reduces phlegm (especially if combined with pepper)
  • Improves acne-related skin problems
  • Used as a whitening agent in cosmetics and grease remover in the house
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Essential oils are used as scenting agents in lotions, soaps, perfumes
  • Flavoring in cakes, pies, preserves, sauces, and marmalades
  • Laxative, relief for constipation

As compared to both lemon and orange juice, limau kasturi juice has higher amounts of essential nutrients, such as calcium (28.07mg per 100g), magnesium (15mg per 100g), iron (2.23mg per 100g), zinc (1.1mg per 100g), sodium (1.5ml per 100g), and also contains lower levels of sugar.

Planted at the foot of Manjushri Hill, limau kasturi trees provides as an excellent source of Vitamin C for full-time staff who are residents of KFR.

A Slice of Heaven "Sponsor a lot of land in the Kechara Forest Retreat, which will go towards the cost of the land and the facilities being built therein. Your support will help make this meritorious project a reality. Contributing to the building of a monastery or a place of worship is a very meritorious act, as taught by the Buddha and many ancient masters that came before. As the Buddha described the benefits of building monasteries to King Sangyal, he taught that people who build monasteries will always have incredible wealth and power in future lives, and will eventually attain enlightenment. The great Indian yogi, Nagden Pawo also said that anyone who contributes to the building of a Buddhist institution, no matter how small that contribution is, even if it is just requesting others for donations, continuously collects tremendous merits even as they go about their daily lives". https://www.vajrasecrets.com/slice-of-heaven-fund - shared by Pastor Antoinette
