#DoMore and Multiply Your Merits This Wesak Day

Apr 25, 2017 | Views: 181

“Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from virtuous deeds.”
~Shakyamuni Buddha

This May 10th, Kechara Forest Retreat opens its doors to the public for Wesak Day. Celebrated by Buddhists everywhere, Wesak commemorates the three most significant events in the life of Buddha Shakyamuni – the birth of Prince Siddartha Gautama, his Enlightenment in becoming Buddha Shakyamuni and the occasion of his parinirvana.

Starting from 8 am with vows for observing the Eight Precepts, this all-day event will culminate in a candlelight procession around Bentong town with decorated floats of Buddha.

A Virtuous Day for Virtuous Deeds

By making merits, we create the causes for purifying negative karma and relieving suffering for a better situation in this and future lives to come. Performing virtuous deeds on Wesak Day multiplies the merits we make by a hundred thousand times!

The Wesak Day celebration at Kechara Forest Retreat has a whole day of meritorious activities planned. Suitable for everyone, from kids to senior citizens and from devout Buddhists to anyone who is spiritually-minded, Wesak Day 2017 at Kechara Forest Retreat will have a virtuous deed for you, or two, or more.

Bathing the Buddha

A perennial favourite in temples around the world, this Wesak Day tradition celebrates the miraculous birth of Prince Siddartha Gautama. The legend tells how the Buddha was born into this world with the ability to walk and talk. According to the tale, the ground he stepped on bore lotus flowers and after taking his first steps, he stood, pointed to the sky with his right hand and to the ground with his left, and said,

“In the Heavens above and on the Earth below, I alone am the Awakened One.”

As soon as he spoke those words, two streams of water gushed from the open sky, bathing the Buddha.

Bountiful Offerings

Making offerings of food, flowers, light and incense is another Wesak tradition to honour the Buddha and his enlightened teachings. The larger-than-life Buddha statues in Kechara Forest Retreat are set in beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens which will make your act of offering a beautiful experience. Explore Kechara Forest Retreat with a holy walk to discover the beauty of the Buddhas and multiply your merits by making offerings to them.

There will also be grand offerings of gold, gold leaf and jewels. Wesak Day 2017 at Kechara Forest Retreat provides well-wishers with a range of ready-to-offer packages for all budgets.

Bringing Happiness to Others

Called “metta”, the practice of loving-kindness is the main pillar of Buddhism, not only to fellow humans but to all sentient beings on the planet. On Wesak, Buddhists celebrate the value of life by liberating the lives of animals. Join us on this virtuous day and gain a bounty of merits by freeing our less-fortunate animal friends from a life of suffering.

At Kechara Forest Retreat, liberating animals is not just an annual event. Visit the aviary and speak with Kechara’s animal rescuers on how saving the lives of all creatures is an on-going daily activity.

As a way to honour life, Buddhists observe not eating meat on Wesak. Reports also say that eating vegetarian is not just good for health but also great for the environment. Come and try a selection of vegetarian food made especially for Wesak Day 2017.

There will also be Vegetarian Vows open to anyone who wants to reduce the suffering of animals slaughtered for meat. The Vegetarian Vows will be held at Kechara Forest Retreat’s Wisdom Hall in the afternoon. Try taking on the vows for a day, a week, a month, a year or even for the rest of your life!

Tibetan ‘Sang’ Incense Blessings, Million Mantra Recitation and More

Kechara Forest Retreat is a contemporary spiritual and meditation centre in the foothills of the Titiwangsa mountain range in Pahang just outside Bentong town. It is also the pinnacle of Kechara, the biggest Tibetan Buddhist organisation in Southeast Asia. For Wesak Day 2017, visitors will get to experience Tibetan Buddhist traditions for cultivating more merits.

Tibetan incense or “sang” offerings is an important practice in Tibetan Buddhism. Burnt in large urns or burners, the “sang-sol” practice is believed to be an invitation for the Buddhas and deities to descend and give their blessings.

Mantras are the base of all meditation in Tibetan Buddhism. Reciting mantras can purify karma, remove obstacles, heal and protect the practitioner. Said to be the essence of all Dharma, mantra recitation opens a stream of merits. Join us in the million mantra recitation all-day at Kechara Forest Retreat for Wesak Day 2017.

Wesak Day 2017 is a day for everyone to pay homage to the Enlightened Beings. There will be special Wesak prayers in Tibetan, Dharma talks, pastor blessings, baby baptisms as well as activities for kids to have fun and make merits too!

‘The Sutra on the Merit of Bathing the Buddha’ describes how

If the Buddhas are given various offerings with a pure heart: incense, flowers, gems, garlands, banners, parasols, and cushions displayed before the Buddha, multifariously adorning him, and the marvellously scented water is used to bathe his noble form, the dark smoke of the burning incense will carry your mind to the Dharma realm…

and produces merits which

…will be immeasurable and without limit; it will be perpetually continued through successive rebirths to the point of Enlightenment.

Powerful Dukkar or White Umbrella Puja “To cut asunder completely all malignant demons, to cut asunder all the spells of others…to turn aside all enemies and dangers and hatred...” Dukkar manifested from the crown of Buddha Shakyamuni as a personification of Buddha’s victory umbrella, and is commonly regarded as the female counterpart to Avalokiteshvara (Kuan Yin), the Buddha of Compassion. https://www.vajrasecrets.com/dukkar-puja-fund-for-legal-affairs, shared by Pastor Antoinette

A Slice of Heaven "Sponsor a lot of land in the Kechara Forest Retreat, which will go towards the cost of the land and the facilities being built therein. Your support will help make this meritorious project a reality. Contributing to the building of a monastery or a place of worship is a very meritorious act, as taught by the Buddha and many ancient masters that came before. As the Buddha described the benefits of building monasteries to King Sangyal, he taught that people who build monasteries will always have incredible wealth and power in future lives, and will eventually attain enlightenment. The great Indian yogi, Nagden Pawo also said that anyone who contributes to the building of a Buddhist institution, no matter how small that contribution is, even if it is just requesting others for donations, continuously collects tremendous merits even as they go about their daily lives". https://www.vajrasecrets.com/slice-of-heaven-fund - shared by Pastor Antoinette
